What's the Story?

I might argue that a burger is the best form of beef (although a ribeye is damn good) and beef is the best meat. This site is about finding the best burgers in the Madison, WI area.

Slice's

Slice's

Slices is what you might call "unassuming."  It's near that parking lot by Oscar Meyer where they do the motorcycle drivers tests.

Why this place is making great burgers:

They're using fresh, never frozen burger from the Jennifer St. Coop.  They have a steel flat top, and they know how to cook a burger to the correct temperature (but sometimes do go over).  They also server half pound burgers, so you can get a nice crust on the outside without having the middle over done.

The bun is nice and light, very fresh, but has an exterior that's a little chewy and holds up well to the juices of the burger.  They also to small, dices fried onions on the flat top that are cooked perfectly.  The ketchup is also less sweet than usual, and that's a big plus.  The fries are served hot, just out of the fryer, and are a nice size, bigger than McDonald's, but much smaller than steak fries, so they aren't too starchy.

And...they are only $5...holy crap!

The Options:

You can get them however you want.  1/3 lb. or 1/2 lb.  You get to choose your toppings.  Bacon seems to only be available some of the time though, but if you ask nicely, they usually take care of you and cook some up.

The cheddar they server is mild and creamy, but they put the perfect amount on, and it melts perfectly and holds the bacon and onions together nicely with the burger.

Best Bet:

Get the half pounder with cheddar, fried (on the flat top) onions, and Bacon.  The lettuce is also nice.  Beware though, our burgers have come out over done from time to time.  I suggest you make a point when you order that you are fussy about temperature, or order Med-Rare...

This is a great burger, made with great, local ingredients, and just left to stand without being messed with.

The Board Says:

Kevin H. - This is a great burger.  Mike likes it with tomato, but I like it without so it doesn't get to watery.  Do your best to get it with bacon and not over cooked.  What an awesome find!

Re-visit updates:

07.06.12 - Mike and Kevin:

2 burgers and fries.  They were med-well to well.  We didn't fuss when we ordered and they were very busy with the Friday fish fry.  They were still very good though.  Some pics are below.

Also note that Kevin took fish home for take out for his special lady, and she commented that the coleslaw was unusually good.
